The Beatles eleventh official album release, and the first to contain non-Beatles material.
The mono version was not a mono mix as such, but rather the stereo tracks combined into one monoaural track.
This album was issued as the soundtrack album of the cartoon file - "Yellow Submarine", although it did not include some of the tracks that were featured in the film (six others !).
The release date was originally planned for December 1968, but due to the success of "The Beatles", this was delayed until mid-January. Of course the success of the double white album was also a factor in the this release being kept off the top slot. Another big factor was the lack of new material, just four new tracks, coupled with an entire side of George Martin's original film score. Thus The Beatles had their second release that failed to reach the upper echelon.
"Yellow Submarine" (the album) spent two weeks at number three, at the same time that "The White Album" was still at number one. And although, as not a big seller world-wide as the usual Beatle fayre it sold 800,000 within three months and topped one million sales before the end of the year.
The film itself, is the first to ever be based on a hit record, but other than the musical content, and a fleeting cameo at the end, the Beatles had nothing to do with the film, even their voices being supplied by actors.
That said, it is still the best musical cartoon film of all time !
The album was also part of "The Beatles Collection" 13 album box set (see Beatles Collection).
On 24th August 1987 this album had it's first release on C.D. which was published in stereo, with a catalogue number of CDP 7 46445 2
And on the same day, the record shop H.M.V. produced a special 12" numbered CD Box Set Comprising:
The C.D. of "Yellow Submarine"
+ A badge
+ A cardboard cut-out Yellow Submarine
+ Informative notes
+ 2 b/w photos
+ The usual cardboard cut-outs
This set had a catalogue number of BEA CD 25/5, and was in a limited edition of 3,000 copies.
The C.D. was also part of "The Beatles Box" 15 C.D. box set (see Beatles C.D. Box).
09/09/09 (Number Nine, Number Nine, Number Nine) - the album was re-released as part of the Beatles In Stereo Remasters collection.
13th September 2009 it re-entered the chart again at number 89 in the lowest position of SEVENTEEN chart positions The Beatles captured in one amazing week.
(see the box set detail for the chart position of all 17 titles together)
Being at number 89 this does not officially count towards chart longevity as it is outside the Top 75 and was the only one of the set to not make the chart on it's own steam.
20th September 2009 - it dropped immediately out of the top 100.
Tape Media
The album was released on cassette tape (stereo only) in November 1987 - Catalogue number - TCPCS 7070 (Originally released January 1969).
